da heads bet: Brendan Rodgers is building something of a dynasty at Celtic, but improving in Europe will weigh heavy on the Northern Irishman’s shoulders.
da brwin: Domestically, the Bhoys remained dominant last season. Despite not going unbeaten, they showed they are a cut above any other team Scotland has to offer.
Brendan Rodgers has built a team with a strong spine, also peppered with class throughout the team. He has built a team full of leaders, capable of playing to the last minute.
After crashing out of both the Champions League and Europa League, Rodgers will be wondering how to take Celtic to the next level. The answer has to be the continuous improvement of the squad. The squad likely does not need to be improved to ensure another Scottish title, or even treble. However, if Rodgers wants to break Europe he needs quality throughout the squad, as well as serious depth. With the success of the club, it means they have to play far more fixtures than many clubs.
With that in mind, who are two coups which would transform Celtic’s summer…
Robert Snodgrass is a top-quality footballer.
Something of a panic buy for West Ham in the January transfer window, but that does not take away from the talent the Scotsman has. As well as his technically ability and pinpoint crosses into the box, he is a set-piece specialist, which would add another dimension to Celtic’ game.
Out on loan at play-off finalists Aston Villa last season, Snodgrass once again proved what a positive impact he can have on a team.
He is valued at £6.3m by transfermarkt. He is 30-years-old, so has plenty of experience. His game has never particularly relied on pace, so he could be a key player in the Celtic team for many years to come.
With the amount of new signings at West Ham, whether Reece Oxford will get much game time at the London Stadium is questionable.
He has has successive loan spells with Borussia Mochengladbach in Germany.
The 18-year-old would be a real coup at Celtic Park, perhaps on a loan deal. He is strong, physical and has plenty of talent on the ball, making surging runs forward.
Capable in both defence, and defensive midfield, his versatility could be of key importance for Celtic. It is the kind of depth provided from a player like Oxford who could help Celtic go deeper into European competitions.
