da leao: The rise of Charlie Austin is one of football’s true endearing stories, and one that has seen the all action forward rise from non league Poole Town to last season’s Premier League outfit QPR.
da winzada777: Austin, 26, finished last seasons campaign as the fourth top scorer in the Barclays Premier League and the highest scoring Englishman with 18 league goals to his name.
His free scoring exploits earned him plenty of Premier League interest during this summer’s transfer window. Two firm offers were placed for his services (from Leicester City and Crystal Palace respectively) but Austin himself turned down these approaches in favour of remaining with his now championship outfit QPR.
But has this come at a cost for him personally? With the 2016 European championships in France beginning shortly after the championship season ends, Austin’s loyalty to his club could well affect his chances of boarding the England plane.
Austin has started this season in fine form for the hoops with five goals in seven appearances, but the odds do appear to be stacked against the striker in his race for a Euro place. Austin himself has just two senior England call up’s to his name with both resulting in being a unused substitute, and with England manager Roy Hodgson only ever drafting three championship players into his National squads throughout his three years in charge (Jack Butland – Birmingham City, Alex McCarthy – Reading and Wilfred Zaha – Crystal Palace).
The January transfer window will no doubt bring more rumours, links and transfer bids for a player who will no doubt be in high demand and at the top of clubs shopping lists after proving his worth in England’s top flight last season. And with the players contract up at the end of the current season his club may well look to cash in on their prize asset or risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.
I, for one, admire his honesty, commitment and loyalty to his club especially in todays footballing world where players commitment and loyalty are often questioned or scrutinised.
But with captain Wayne Rooney, the performances of Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy and also Theo Walcott who is now being employed in an out and out striking role, Austin may find his chances of a first major tournament with England hard to come by.
