Roberto Mancini has confirmed his interest in signing Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi but fears that the Italian international will sign a new contract for the Giallorossi in January he told Sky Sports.
De Rossi is out of contract in the summer after 11 years in the capital and over 300 appearances for the side, but all negotiations over staying in Italy have stalled.
Mancini wants the Italian international to boost his midfield options at the Etihad stadium with a hectic fixture schedule in the New Year that could see City competing for four trophies.
City could make a January bid to beat their rivals to the signature of the talented midfielder, but all dealings will depend on De Rossi’s contract negotiations. The Rome born midfielder has stated that if he left Roma, he would also leave Italy to play football elsewhere in Europe.
Mancini told Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport: “If De Rossi is one day available on the market then Manchester City will be ready, as will Real Madrid, Chelsea and all the big clubs.
“He’s a top player, one of those few players who can get into the very best teams in the world. He’s a complete midfielder, with class and experience.
“A Roman is very attached to his origins and his way of life. As a result, I wouldn’t be surprised if he renewed his contract.”
